week of 3.1.09

Unsettled times, these are.

The events flowing from the present marriage of politics and economics are to some a God-sent answer to years of prayer while others see them as ocean waves that wash in and out ceaselessly cutting away the ground on which they live , and they seem to have only the ability to watch and sigh.

Besides the national arena, recently in the short span of three days death visited near me four times.  And three of the four now gone were extremely young (and the other wasn't old).  The insurance companies would call my week an actuarial anomaly.  But what I want to say is such happenings keep us unsettled.  When we've pondered our best about "whys" and "wherefores," we really don't know and murmur our best answer-- death can come to anyone at any time.

It's unsettling to not know what any new day will bring.  And none of us do.  For sure, no prophetic insights from me.

Our only defense is to be wise enough to live our lives to the fullest and be fully prepared.

Peter once* received shocking pesonal news from Jesus: "when you are old, someone will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go."  The future view being more than Peter could fully swallow, he tried a diversion by asking Jesus to tell him about John's road in the days ahead.  Jesus' answer gives an insight about how we go onward in His service, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?  You must follow me."  We just follow and let Him call shots.

One aspect of spiritual maturity is an ability to be led "where [we] do not want to go."  Unspiritual people are naturally unsettled when paths lead places we'd not choose to go.  Job gave us the spiritual point of view in a memorable way when, knowing the constant love of God and His unfailing care and provision for him with what he needed as opposed to what he'd choose, asked this rhetorical question of his wife, "We take the good days from God; why not also the bad days?" [Job. 2:10].

"God is a safe place to hide, ready to help when we need him.  [So] we stand fearless at the cliff-edge of doom, courageous in seastorm or earthquake"
[Psa. 46:1-2].

* This event is recorded in John 21:15-23
