VBS Guest Blog by Susan Martin

VBS is just 12 short weeks away and now is the time to really get started on it. I have asked Susan Martin to be the guest blogger today to tell us a little bit about this year’s VBS.

I do plan to do a better job blogging in the future myself. We have had some technical issues that have kept me from it here lately. So here is Susan’s post.

The 2009 VBS theme is “Studio Go”. Although this theme will be quite different from last year’s laid-back western theme, I hope that it will be just as enjoyable to our members and community as last year’s VBS. The scene for Studio Go is a game show. I think the kids will enjoy the high-energy and flashiness of it, as well as the audience participation it entails.

One of the biggest reasons our VBS committee chose Studio Go for this year’s theme was the emphasis of the program on service. The five points of emphasis are all things for us to GO do: Go Lead, GO Risk, GO Tell, GO Obey, GO Serve.  We hope to incorporate many service projects into the week, so if you know of a special need that we could help with at that time, please let us know.

There are many ways to be involved with VBS, and it takes all of us to make it a success. I wanted to share some of the ways you can help so that you can be thinking of where you might want to serve. We will need leaders in all of our stations (Crafts, Bible Story, Games, Service Projects), group leaders to travel from station-to-station, actors and actresses for skits, preschool and nursery teachers, teen teacher, registration workers, kitchen help, cooks, clean-up crew, stage and prop development, people to paint and build. As usual we will ask you to bring soft drinks and maybe some food items. We will be asking you for monetary donations as well. Last year you were so willing to help in this way, giving over $900!!! That allowed us to really make VBS a huge success, and we want to continue that success again this year. Many of our crafts will require common household items such as baby food jars, so very soon we will make a list and begin asking you to bring those things.

One of the most immediate needs we have is finding our next VBS director. I absolutely enjoyed working on VBS last year and am looking forward to Studio Go this year. However, as much fun as I had working with everyone involved and seeing it come together, it was a big commitment and I am not making it a life-long one. I am not going to be the director next year, so we are already looking for someone who is willing to step up and take the director’s position next year. This person would be involved in VBS this year and see how it all gets put together. We would like to find this person now so that they can witness all the behind-the-scenes planning that goes on. If you would like to fill this role please talk to me or Richard. Or, if you think you know someone who might be good for the job, talk to them about it or give us their name so we can talk to them.

Thank you all for your support of last year’s VBS. Begin praying that this year’s VBS will be a success in teaching our children about serving God, as well as allowing us to shine our light to the community.
